The national sexoffenders registry typically abides by the following guidelines:
* Only those sex offenders who were convicted of a listed offense on or after October 1, 1995, or those were convicted before that date and were still under the control of a department of corrections for a listed offense must be registered.
* All sexual offenders must register with their local law enforcement agency after conviction and before sentencing.
* Offenders must register their address and other personal information with the local law agency within a certain amount days after release from prison. (Days may differ for each state.)
* Offenders have a specified amount of days to report a change of address. (Days may differ for each state.)
* Offenders must report status at an institution of higher learning within a specified amount of days. (Days may differ for each state.
* The length that a sex offender must remain on a national sexoffenders registry may differ depending upon the nature of the offense and the registering state.
