Finding Local Sex Offenders

Because of Megan's Law, every state has now developed a database that lists sex offenders and their current reported addresses. This information seeks to inform and enhance the public's awareness of sexual offenders in the area.
Convicted sex offenders are required by law to register with their local law enforcement agency. If they move to a new address, they typically have five days to update their registry information.
For those people interested in finding local sex offenders, they can access various Websites with detailed registries on the Internet. They can also contact their local law enforcement registry.

Local Sex Offender Lists

When sex offenders are released from confinement, they are required by law to register their names and addresses with their local law enforcement agencies. This procedure is required for several reasons.

* The local law enforcement agency needs a record of convicted sex offenders.
* The public will have access to the addresses of convicted sex offenders in order to focus on public safety.
* Schools and daycares can also become aware of any convicted sex offenders in the area.

It is easy for the public to access these local sex offender lists. Keep in mind, however, that these lists may not give information on the offender's complete crime record. However, the lists should be continually updated as more sex offenders register and/or they change addresses.

You can check out your local sex offender lists by calling your local law enforcement agency.

Offender Search Database

Any person can access a Florida offender search database online. The database contains public record information on sex offenders. These offenders have been placed into the database because they have been convicted of a sex-related and/or a specified crime against children.

Florida law requires that offenders register with the offender search database. The list is updated regularly and can be viewed online.
