Tip of the Week

In some states, the only sex offenders not allowed to live near schools are those who are on probation. Often, after their probation is up, they can move down the street from a school or daycare. While these people may still be listed on a sexual offender list, how do we know where they are?
Anyone can do a sexual offender search of his or her area. Many databases or Websites allow a person to input a zip code, and then the names of all the registered sexual offenders are listed, along with their addresses, pictures, and even the nature of their offense.

Law enforcement agencies, parents, and schools need to do their part to educate children about the risks of sex offenders. Kids need to understand that they can't tell a sex offender from another person simply by looking at them. Parents need to pay attention to their children's activities, especially computer usage. Finally, everyone needs to stay informed by checking the sexual offender list for his or her area periodically.
