What should I do if I receive a notification of a sexual offender in my community?

Public Access to Sexual Offenders List

There are national sex offender registries which offer the public access to sex offenders lists. Anyone can check these lists to see if there are any sexual predators in his or her area.

Some communities notify residents when a high risk sex offender has moved into the community. If you receive a notification, you can take the following steps:

* Talk to your children about staying away from strangers.

* Tell your children where the sex offender lives.

* Show your children a picture of the sex offender.

* Role play with your children so they know what to do if they are approached by a stranger.

* If you feel that a crime has been committed, or you suspect inappropriate activity, contact your local police department.

* Check with your school to find out what precautions they take to protect your child and other children. Ask them if they offer a program about dealing with strangers.
