August 18, 2006, Newsletter Issue #14: Sex Offender Notification

Tip of the Week

While anyone can access a national sex offender registry to view a list of sexual offenders, many communities take it one step further by notifying neighborhoods that a sex offender will soon be residing in their area. The number of sex offenders in state prisons continues to rise. There are treatment programs available, but few inmates actually receive treatment, and even those that do are not considered rehabilitated.

While creating a national sex offenders registry has deterred some sex crimes, many people feel that it isn't enough. Some communities are enacting notification statutes that either makes sex offender information available or requires law enforcement agencies to give out notices to communities about the sex offenders in the area. This may be done by letters, fliers, etc.
